This article focuses on a training experience in statistics teaching involving students from the Undergraduate Degree in Social Communication of the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (Portugal). It results from an exploratory study whose aim is to identify potentialities for the learning of statistics through students' involvement in a research project. This study constitutes an investigation into the trainer's (the first author of this article) own practice. Data were collected through document collection and student questionnaires. The students' involvement in the research project resulted in an increased interest in statistics´ learning and in the development of their transnumeration skills, rea-soning with models and integration of statistics in the context. This study also highlights the value that students attribute to the statistic and the spreadsheet tool for their future professional life, by engaging in a statistical research project with underlying real data.
